Muscat International Airport Sets New Benchmark as First in the Middle East to Offer eduroam Service

MUSCAT – In a groundbreaking collaboration between the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation, represented by the Oman Research and Education Network (OMREN), and the Oman Airports Company, Muscat International Airport has ushered in a new era of connectivity. The airport's introduction of eduroam, a secure wireless internet service tailored for students and academics, marks a significant milestone in bridging the gap between education and technology. This pioneering initiative extends the reach of eduroam beyond traditional educational institutions, encompassing public hotspots such as airports, city centers, and other public areas.

The inauguration ceremony witnessed the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including H.E. Dr. Saif Al Hadabi, Undersecretary of the Ministry for Scientific Research and Innovation, Sheikh Ayman Al Hosani, CEO of Oman Airports Company, along with various eminent managers and officials. This momentous occasion marked a significant milestone in bridging the gap between education and connectivity. Currently, the eduroam service is available in 36 strategic locations across the Sultanate of Oman, including universities, colleges, and research centers.

This innovative service empowers users to effortlessly and securely connect to the wireless internet network in educational institutions affiliated with the Oman Research and Education Network. Muscat International Airport's inclusion in the league of 36 international airports worldwide offering eduroam further highlights its commitment to pioneering technological advancements. Notably, it also stands out as the first airport in Arabic countries to activate eduroam, reinforcing its dedication to fostering connectivity beyond the traditional education community.

OMREN has ambitious plans to expand the service to encompass public areas across multiple locations in the Sultanate, paving the way for a future where seamless internet access is not limited to educational institutions alone but is accessible to all, fostering a society where connectivity is at the forefront of progress.
